Land Chairman of the Young Generation in the SPÖ, Vorarlberg (1978-1988). Bregenz district chairman of the SPÖ (since 1989).

Member of the Bundesrat (1989-1994). Member of the Nationalrat (19th legislative period, 1994-1995). Member of the Nationalrat (20th legislative period).

Member of the European Parliament (since 1995). Delegation Chairman, EU - Slovak Republic Joint Parliamentary Committee (1995-1999).
